INTERNSHIP (S)!

6:47 AM

Hello everyone!

So today I'm going to talk about my internship. Unfortunately I can't get in to specific details about my internship, like where it is located and what it is called. But I'll try my hardest to explain what I am doing!

I have no idea if I told you guys, but I work with children. Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to work with children/teenagers. First I wanted to be a teacher and a few years later, I wanted to work in a daycare facility because my mom works in a daycare facility
. Sometimes she took me to work with her. And I got to play with the little children. They were aged from 0 to 4 years.

Now we are going to fast forward too my secondary school. I (and some other students) got the chance to be a student mediator. When there was a fight or quarrel at our school the teachers contacted us to mediate and ‘fix’ it. Which was pretty difficult because we  were not allowed to tell the people whom were having a fight or quarrel what to do or how to fix it. They had to think of a solution themselves.

We had to steer them in the ‘right’ direction, by giving hints very subtly . We also participated in training's and we role played situations with student quarrels.

I liked the idea of 'fixing' problems. That was another reason I wanted to work with children/ teenagers.
I am going to stereotype here. I am not saying that they are all the same, but most of them show the same behavior.Children/teenagers are kind of gullible, because they get easily influenced by ‘popular’ opinions. Sometimes children/teenagers also have one point of view; their own. That’s okay, but when time passes by, they also need to learn to listen and respect other peoples opinion.

Okay, back to my internship. In my first year of my study I had an internship in a community center. My ‘job’ was to invent creative activities for children. I worked  with children, aged from 4 to 7 years old. So their (fine) motor development was not fully accomplished yet. I based my (creative) activities on that.

In my second year we had theoretical subjects. We also had a lot of group projects and we were being prepared for our bachelor thesis for our 4th and final year; which is and was a pain in the ***.

In my third year (now) we have a trainee ship which lasts for a year.
The children I work with, are aged from 9 years too 12 years. They face problems on areas like confidence, standing up for yourself, math, language (Dutch) and IT. It’s a program which lasts for 12 weeks. In those 12 weeks we improve skills which: school, parents and children indicated, needed improvement and help. The first time the children arrive, they need to choose learning goals on different subjects. Every other three weeks they choose a different learning goal to work with. We divide the children, based on what the parents and teachers said (or what we noticed), into different activities. The activities are given in a playful manner. So the children unconsciously work on their abilities and-/ or learning goals. We also have conversations about their learning goals and other things we notice.

This was it! I tried to keep it short and lucid. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

A fun fact: at the moment I am into a song from Kygo ft. Parson James- Stole the show. Give it a try! You won't regret it :)

xoxo
